Q Beginning Our Inquiry: Conformity & Obedience We'll begin our reading for Unit One next week. The assigned readings for Week Two focus on the social phenomena conformity and obedience. In preparation for the reading and writing you'll be doing next week, you're going to explore what you already know about conformity and obedience, as well as the related concepts of disobedience and nonconformity. *Note: This is a useful learning strategy in general. Whenever you're about to engage in a particular area of inquiry, especially in an academic context, it's good to think about the topic, to surface the prior knowledge you have about the topic you're going to investigate. Doing so makes it much easier to then engage with readings on the topic. STEP ONE: Choose one of these concepts to think and write about during this activity. Select whichever one seems the most interesting to you. Conformity Nonconformity Obedience Disobedience STEP TWO: Make your first post (15 points, at least 150 words). In your first post, answer the following questions: What is a real-world example of the key concept you chose? (What's a situation, event, or experience that shows us what conformity, nonconformity, obedience, or disobedience looks like?) What typically motivates this type of behavior? (Why do people conform, not conform, obey, OR disobey?) What are common outcomes of this type of behavior? (What are typical consequences or results of conforming, not conforming, obeying, OR disobeying?) STEP THREE: Respond to someone else's post (10 points, at least 75 words). Identify a post you find interesting and respond to it. You could agree with what the person has to say, and explain why. You could disagree and explain. Or, you could pick up where they leave off, adding to what they have to say.
